Run! It’s Twitter!

January 5, 2010

The genie is out of the bottle. And you’re not getting him back into it. Sorry.

In this metaphor social media is the genie.

Why won’t you be able to get the slinky bastard back into his bottle? Simple. He’s become a monster. Social media has grown (and continues to grow) exponentially.

Lots of things have grown into Mothra-sized proportions (a big, Japanese monster for those not cultured in Saturday afternoon matinees), so what makes this one so much different than any other monster before it (television and radio for example)?

This monster has given the least among us a voice. Sure the least among us needs a computer and Internet access, but still… Social media has empowered the little guy to have his or her voice heard.

Quite possibly the only thing scarier than a 600 foot tall, 20,000 ton monster barreling through downtown Tokyo is an Average Joe who is willing to spend an hour writing a rant about how stupid 2012 really is on Rottentomatoes.com, or how he or she hates the new book by Dan Brown on Amazon.com.

And don’t get me started on the power of Twitter…

Yep, it’s a new day and age and the genie is not only loose – he’s blogging. Run for your life!

Love the comparison here. I’d love to get your ideas on which posts or bloggers/twits are the Mothras of the social media world.
