Tragic comedy

January 9, 2010

Sometimes it is hard to decide if I want to laugh or cry over some comments that readers leave on news articles at Dawn.com, a Pakistani newspaper website. It is bad enough to read bad news, then to read sarcastic responses by its readers. No matter how disastrous and disappointing the news may be, I am very quickly reminded that one thing that the 63 years of poor political history of Pakistan has taught its nation very well is how to laugh at itself. Dawn is a multimedia news website that not only gives its readers information but also a chance to give feedback and interact with its audience. Dawn started as a newspaper close to 70 years ago by M. A. Jinnah in India to mirror the views of Indian Muslims. M. A. Jinnah passed away for over 60 years now but Dawn is doing exactly what he meant for it to do. Dawn news entered the world of web 2.0 and provided a website that is not only informative but involves its audience through surveys, contests, forums and much more. There is rarely ever something to laugh at on the website but there are always honest opinions and feedback to read with news that I would even pay for to read… which obviously I don’t have to 🙂
