“Get off Schweddy’s Balls”

September 27, 2011

Have you heard about the controversy about the new Ben and Jerry’s flavored ice cream “Schweddy Balls”? Let me fill you in on the stupidity of this argument.

“Ben & Jerry’s announced their newest ice cream flavor which sounds anything but appealing”…”The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive.” This announcement was released online, by the One Million Moms, a conservative nonprofit organization based in Mississippi.

The ice cream “Schweddy Balls” came from the Saturday Night Live (SNL) skit which featured actor Alec Baldwin, who played a holiday bakery owner, by the name of Pete Schweddy and radio talk show hostess, played by actresses Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer.

The conservative group says that Ben and Jerry’s ice cream are “Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket.”

One Million Moms wants all of their members to contact Ben & Jerry’s public relations manager, Sean Greenwood, by constantly sending him massive amounts of emails, requesting that no more batches be distributed. In addition, they want to stop the company from producing any other batches of ice cream with offensive names or else they will boycott.

Are you serious ladies? Come on, lighten up and don’t get your panties in a wad! It is just a flavor of ice cream. There are more important things that need to be argued against, like children being bullied and committing suicide because of it, as well as child obesity, not if a food product has a distinct name you dislike.

What the One Million Moms are doing is giving great PR to Ben and Jerry’s, by promoting free advertisement on there websites and popularity recognition to the public. I have always known about Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, was never a huge fan, but a fan.

Now that this flavor has made a social trend in all channels of communication, my boyfriend and I are seeking to buy it, just for kicks. We want to taste it and keep the container for memorabilia.

However, One Million Moms is slightly effecting the distribution of the ice cream from being released in stores nationwide. For example, my boyfriend and I drove to our neighborhood grocery store H.E.B in Houston, Texas, so what happened?

NO! “Schweddy Balls” in sight, so we asked the store manager if he was going to receive inventory of Ben and Jerry’s “Schweddy Balls” ice cream. “No, sorry we most likely won’t be getting that ice cream here at all,” said the H.E.B store manager.  What a devastation it was for the moment but not to panic, there is a Ben and Jerry’s Scoop Shop in the city of Houston, mmmm…

To end this nonsense that these Moms have started is that “What we’re hearing from our fans is, we like it, keep it out.” We’ll get through this year and see what our fans want next year” said Greenwood to

So my advice to the One Million Moms is to choose your battles wisely, because what you’ve done is made Ben and Jerry’s more profitable, and superstars.
